Bone grafting is recommended when a patient is missing sufficient bone density to support dental implants. Diminished density is typically the result of resorption, the process in which the bone misses stimulation provided by a tooth root and begins to deteriorate in the area affected by tooth loss.
During the bone grafting procedure, donated tissue is placed in the deficient area to reinforce the weakened bone. As you heal, the existing bone grows around the grafted tissue, strengthening the entire jawbone in the process. Once healing is complete, patients are often able to support dental implants.
Bone loss starts to occur shortly after a tooth has been extracted. To preserve bone density and minimize bone loss, Dr. Bedich can perform a socket preservation procedure after tooth removal. He can choose from several techniques to preserve bone, depending on the particular situation.
The most common socket preservation method involves placing bone or bone substitute into the socket left by the removed tooth. This encourages your body to heal and regenerate bone in the area. The goal of this procedure is to maintain bone density, eliminate shrinkage and collapse of the surrounding gum and facial tissues, and create a strong foundation for implant placement.
In some cases of resorption, the jawbone thins on the alveolar crest, becoming too narrow for dental implants to be placed. Ridge modification corrects this issue by grafting artificial or donated bone tissue to the deficient area. Much like bone grafting, patients undergo a period of recovery during which the existing bone tissue grows around the donor tissue and strengthens the entire area.
Another form of bone grafting, sinus augmentation, is a treatment only recommended when bone resorption occurs on the upper jawbone. When teeth are missing from the upper arch, the sinus cavity becomes larger, diminishing the bone available for implant placement. Sinus augmentation adds to, or “augments” the existing tissue and prepares the jaw for upper arch dental implants.
Gum Disease Treatment
To ensure that your dental implants have the best chance of success, it’s important to treat any symptoms of gum disease (also called periodontal disease) before your implant procedure. During your initial consultation, Dr. Bedich will look for any signs of gum disease, including bleeding, swollen or sore gums, or shifted teeth. If you’re experiencing any symptoms of gum disease, he may recommend that you undergo treatment to reverse its effects before dental implant placement to help ensure a successful outcome.
